The Child Health and Well-Being in Miami-Dade County: 2007 Parent Survey Results summarizes the results of a comprehensive telephone survey conducted during the spring of 2007 with 1,915 parents of children throughout Miami-Dade County. The survey results are representative of all children under 18 living in households in Miami-Dade County; they provide data on child health and well-being and permit analysis by geographic area, age range and race/ethnicity of our children.
The Children's Trust Health Committee, staff and other key community stakeholders collaborated with researchers at Child Trends to establish the content of the survey; most of the items on the questionnaire were drawn from national surveys which will permit comparisons and benchmarking to measure progress. The parent survey asked specific questions related to child well-being, namely: the health and disability status of children and their parents; children’s receipt of medical care (including vision and dental), access to a medical home, and health insurance coverage; the presence of healthy habits and child safety at home, in school, and the community; for young children (ages birth to 5), the extent of parents’ learning activities with their child, early child care services, and their children's socioemotional behaviors; for school-age children, parents’ perceptions of their child’s out-of-school care, extracurricular activities, and social competence; parents’ source and use of parenting and health information; parenting behaviors, family stress, and neighborhood support; and lastly, whether parents and their children received all needed services, and if not, why not.
Survey results will assist The Children's Trust in planning investments to meet child and family needs by identifying areas of inequity and need where strategic investments are likely to make a difference. The baselines established by this research will help The Trust gage the impact of the infusion of service dollars into our community over time. The results are also expected to stimulate discussions among policymakers and the public, which in turn will lead to better-informed policy development. Executive Summary Only Download (57 kb .pdf)
