The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) of The Children's Trust, comprised of 10th , 11th and 12th -grade students from Miami-Dade schools, offers an excellent experience for youth to garner first-hand knowledge of children’s services and advocacy, and to hone their leadership skills. The YAC advises The Children’s Trust on issues and concerns from their unique perspective. A member of the YAC (elected) is invited to attend monthly board meetings.
Participation on the YAC can be counted toward fulfilling community service requirements.
As part of their involvement, YAC members can expect to share their ideas and experiences, gain hands-on experience involving children’s services and advocacy; develop leadership potential through interactive activities, and experience a nurturing mentor-ship experience.
The committee advises The Children’s Trust on issues of importance to youth in the community, provides a meaningful avenue for youth involvement, strengthens positive perception about youth, fosters community development, and develops an increased sense of civic engagement among members as it fosters their leadership, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
As part of its many activities, the 2006-07 YAC traveled to Tallahassee during the Florida Legislative Session and met with the governor and members of the state assembly.
